What “high-efficiency” means

High-efficiency (HE) washers are designed to use less water and energy than traditional washers. They typically use sensors to adjust water to the load and rely on a tumbling or low-water wash action rather than a full tub with a tall agitator. Many spin faster, which removes more water before drying. Specific savings vary by model, so check the manufacturer’s specifications or the EnergyGuide label for numbers.

Pros

  • Lower water use. HE washers generally use noticeably less water per load than older traditional machines.
  • Lower energy use. Using less water, particularly less hot water, usually means lower energy use.
  • Larger capacity. Many HE models have bigger drums, so you may be able to wash more per load.
  • Gentler on clothes. Tumbling action is often gentler than a tall agitator, though results depend on the model and fabric.
  • Faster spins. Clothes may come out drier, which can cut drying time (see how to improve dryer performance).
  • Less detergent. HE detergent is concentrated, and the dose per load is small.

Cons

  • You need HE detergent. Regular detergent can make too many suds, which can hurt rinsing and leave residue. Look for the HE mark on the label, and do not overdose.
  • Odor and mildew risk. Especially in front loaders, moisture, residue and a closed door can lead to musty smells. Wipe the door seal, leave the door or lid ajar between loads, and run a cleaning cycle as the manual advises.
  • Longer cycles. Some HE cycles run longer than older machines, because they use less water.
  • Higher upfront cost. Many HE models cost more to buy.
  • Repairs can be more complex. More sensors and electronics can mean costlier or harder repairs. If your washer has sensing trouble, see our guide to Whirlpool Cabrio sensor problems.
  • Different feel. Some people find less water or no agitator takes getting used to, and cleaning heavily soiled loads may need a heavier cycle or pre-treating.

Front load vs top load HE washers

  • Front load: usually the most water-efficient and often gentle on fabric, but they need door seal care to avoid odor, and loading means bending unless the machine is on a pedestal.
  • Top load HE: easier to load, and can run faster mid-cycle. Some have an agitator and some have an impeller or wash plate. They may use more water than front loaders.

Which is better depends on your space, budget and habits.

What does an agitator do?

An agitator is the post in the center of some top-load washers. It twists or moves to push clothes through the water. Some HE top loaders use a low-profile wash plate or impeller instead, and front loaders use no agitator at all.

What does “H” mean on a washing machine?

It depends on where you see it. “HE” stands for high-efficiency, and the HE mark on detergent indicates it’s for these machines. On some temperature controls, “H” can stand for hot. If you are unsure, check the label or your manual.

Tips to avoid common HE problems

  • Use HE detergent, and measure it.
  • Do not overload.
  • Leave the door or lid open after finishing to let it dry.
  • Clean the dispenser and seal periodically.
  • Follow your manual’s cleaning recommendations.
  • Learn the cycles. Our cycle guide explains what each stage does, and the Whirlpool cold wash setting article covers temperature choices.

Is an HE washer right for you?

If water and energy savings, larger capacity and gentler washing matter to you, an HE washer is often a good fit. If you are sensitive to odor risks, want the lowest purchase price, or prefer the traditional approach, weigh the drawbacks. Compare models and read the manual for care instructions.
